The Smoothbeam Laser
Smoothbeam is a new safe and effective treatment that has been proven
in clinical trials to reduce acne inflammation and acne scars. The
Smoothbeam uses an extra long 1450nm wavelength to gently heat the
dermis layer of the skin. The heat interrupts the sebaceous gland
production and reduces acne inflammation.
Heating the dermis also stimulates production of collagen and elastin,
thus smoothing out acne scars fine lines and wrinkles.
The treatments take about 20-30 minutes to complete, spaced out every
4-6 weeks. The treatments involve mild discomfort described by some
like "snapping an elastic on your skin". A special cryo cooling spray
is applied to minimize pain. Positive results are seen in 2-6
treatments.
It is common to experience some redness after treatment. The redness
lasts approximately 6-8 hours. It is best to avoid any tanning for 3
weeks prior to treatment. Some Darker skinned individuals may
experience some abnormal darkening or lightening of the skin after
treatment. This effect may last 2-6 months. Darker skinned individuals
are given a test patch prior to treatment.
The Smoothbeam has rarely been associated with burns or blisters, but
if they do occur, resolution is seen in 1-2 weeks. Scarring after burns
has not so far been seen with this laser but theoretically could occur.
The 1064 Yag Laser
Treatment studies with the 1064 Yag have noted about 30% improvement
over a 2-3 month course. Treatments are done every 2-4 weeks.
Mild redness persists for a day or two, but no burns or blisters, or
persistent darkening have been noted. The procedure is slightly
uncomfortable but not painful.
The Zimmer Cryo5 is helpful if any discomfort is noted
